Must do: Spinning

In an earlier post I wrote about Pilates exercises, but if you are looking for a cardio workout my recommendation is Spinning. Spinning is practically indoor cycling. It is an organised activity which focuses on endurance, strength and recovery.

For this exercise you will need a special bicycle (the weights in the wheels make this bicycle so special) and a good instructor. The instructor will lead the class through exercises designed to simulate terrain and situations similar to outdoor biking. Music is a must have during a Spinning class. Music will energize the atmosphere and will motivate the participants.

Spinning - Pros:
  • indoor exercise, perfect when it's cold outside and riding a real bicycle would be uncomfortable
  • you have an instructor who will guide you but you are the one who decides which difficulty level you chose
  • effective workout. In 40 minutes you can burn between 400 and 500 kcal
  • indoor cycling strengthens the muscles of the lower body. It tones the quadriceps and hamstrings, along with working the back and hips
Spinning - Cons:
  • you don't use a real bike
  • simulates real biking but it does not replicate it
  • it can be boring after several sessions. It is advised to take 2 different classes in parallel (I would recommend it along with Pilates)
